The moment that Vorthoses and other flavor fans have been waiting for has finally arrived: The first part (out of three) of the Planeswalker's Guide to Theros has been posted on magicthegathering.com. First off, there is a brief overview on how life on the plane of Theros works, which is sort of old news. (The gods live in Nyx, the night sky, a world of dreams, but can easily visit the mortal world.) Then we get to the exciting stuff: The properties and biographies of the gods themselves. The five major gods are the prime movers of the events that'll be happening in the coming block - each of them is all-powerful over a certain aspect of nature and of civilization, and everything's subject to their whims. And with such larger-than-life personalities, there will definitely be some incredible stories as riveting and epic as those of Greek mythology. Here's a breakdown of the good stuff we learned:

The gods are legendary enchantment creatures. The sentence "The gods themselves are living enchantments" is pretty damn unambiguous: looks like Lucent Liminid was foreshadowing Theros. That card's flavor text was, as it were, only inaccurate about the gender of the solar deity. They aren't the only enchantment creatures around, either: Their servants, everything from Nymphs to the Elemental sparks generated by the hammer of Purphoros the forge god, have an aspect of Nyx in them and hence the enchantment type.

They also each have a legendary Equipment. Some, but not all, of the Greek gods had important weapons associated with them - Zeus's thunderbolts, Poseidon's trident, Artemis and Apollo's bows, Hermes's caduceus. That idea is extended to the Theros pantheon, and hence they all are assigned a wondrous weapon of incredible magical power. Heliod is said to have sunk Arixmethes, the lost polis based on Atlantis, with his solar spear Khrusor - maybe that city will rise again later in the block. Regardless, we can count on a big mythic cycle of these artifacts.

The five major gods are not alone. Yep, Nylea's apparent feud with Karametra, goddess of the hearth (so that's who she is!) confirms that the pantheon doesn't solely consist of the "big five" - while undoubtedly they'll be the only gods who appear in card form in this set, we should be on the lookout for cards of the other gods later in the block
